Episode 017 – Collections to Pub Games

Episode Summary:

In this episode, Kyle and Adam pick up right where they left off—diving deeper into the strange, nostalgic, and sometimes accidental world of collecting. From childhood toys lost to time, to long-forgotten attic treasures worth a surprising amount on eBay, the two explore why some items become valuable and why others don’t. They talk Deadpool comics, Marvel figurines, McFarlane toys, and the legendary Boba Fett missile-firing figure that became rare because it literally blinded kids.

Their conversation drifts into gaming nostalgia as they remember old Nintendo and Sega titles—everything from the brilliant simplicity of Lemmings to the questionable quality of many retro classics. Sonic, Streets of Rage, Gain Ground, and the tragedy of terrible remasters all get their moment.

Naturally, the topic shifts into film adaptations of video games, critic culture, Rotten Tomatoes scores, and why trailers spoil everything. Adam confesses he avoids trailers entirely now.

The episode closes with a surprisingly deep dive into pub games and bowling culture — from learning to curve a bowling ball, to the questionable hygiene of bowling alley finger holes, to designing the world’s most chaotic custom bowling team shirt (featuring wolves, moons, and Aurora Borealis). Finally, they roll into darts and pool, and whether alcohol makes these games better or worse.

A fun, nostalgic and chaotic journey from childhood collections all the way to pub-night competition.

Okay. Welcome back to the continuing podcast with me, Adam. And over in the other corner is Kyle, you and you. Yeah. Good. Thank you Adam today. Well, I mean, we finished off talking about what was it we were finished on, collectible collectibles. Yes. So, what about you? And have you got any collectibles at all? No. My childhood is, filled with regrets, and, no fun way to stuff.

A fun way to start a fun. Yeah. I’ve, I’ve wanted to collect numerous things as as I’ve got older. And, you know, I toys and and that. But it’s just never. It never dawned on me to keep things. I was never a person to keep things in the box. I mean, you wouldn’t think to as a kid, though, for the most part, right?
Most kids aren’t going to keep things like if a child in fresh condition, if a child gets what they want for Christmas and they don’t open it, they’re even a child. Yeah, they need to. I think they just need to go through a check. I think unless kids, unless kids have some sort of writing, I don’t know, some sort of idea that that these might one day be worth something and they get two.
If you’ve got two and keep one in the box, fine. You know what I mean? It’s quite as a as a kid. I don’t know how you’d be able to keep. Oh when I, with a box, I would somehow I’d probably open the box before I even ended the wrapping paper when I was a child. You know?
I mean, I know what this is straight out done, but, yeah, I’ve, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve wanted to collect things. I think I’ve mentioned I’ve got a few comic books, you know, like, got a few older Deadpool comics, you know, from several years ago. Yeah. You know, again. But they’re not worth anything nice.
They just wish that, like, you go up into the loft or the attic or whatever you want to call it. I don’t know what you would call it, but you don’t just wish you’d go up there and find a box that has, like, things that you had as a child. This is this happens a lot. I’m seeing it more and more that people go, oh, I’ve just gone into my mom’s attic, my mom’s loft, and I found this big box of my childhood things, and it’s like, I don’t I a collectible in there that’s now worth 2500 parts.
Yeah. I would love to. The certain families, my mom, my wife’s parents, or her mom specifically kept all the kids toys. You know, they’ve still got small soldiers toys, which. And, you know, an old Millennium Falcon, the stuff like, it’s not the massive, massive one, but it is quite big. But yeah. And I’m like, and you’ve got these other.
She’s like giving it to the kids to play with. I’m like, hold on. That. That’s even the small soldiers. Now I’m like, you’ve got a chip, has it? The chip has. It’s at least worth like 50 or £60 on eBay. Now. Yeah, yeah. But it’s like to me that seems like a lot of money. But then when you know, child ones toy nowadays, it’s like also 50, 60 kids buy a toy.
It’s like it’s extreme. Oh yeah. Yeah. Okay. I, I would say I never, I never collected anything. As I got older, I started enjoying comic books more. And, I had a few collections. I think the biggest collection I’ve probably got was do you. They still did not. You know, those magazines where you start with edition one is, you know, 1 pound and you only 1 pound, and you get something on the front of it to build.
Yeah, yeah. And by the time, you know, like, only three to the only three editions and issue two is like 6 pound for issue one was 1 pound. Why am I paying 6 pound now exactly the episode. Yeah. But one thing that’s, you know, my, my parents bought for me as I was kind of growing up.
It’s also one of the Marvel collections and each kind of addition they would have, a book with it that you could kind of go goes through the character and it’s got the history and everything on the character. But then you also have like a, I don’t know, I think it’s like a small, a cast iron hand-painted figurine of the character as well.
Okay. And I had those in the boxes for, I want to say probably. So this is before I even moved to the UK. So they’ve been in the boxes for probably about 12 to 15 years. And yeah, it was only this last year I actually decided to just take them off the box and actually enjoy them.
Yeah. For what they are, because there is this thing about keeping it in the box and it’s nice too. They’re not worth anything, man. But no. Oh again. No, I went on eBay then all that. So I decided to keep them there. There are some that are, you know, worth worth a little bit more. But again, for me, when I actually see them, you know, there’s I don’t know, they make me happy when I see them especially like moving these boxes and, you know, whatever else it’s, it’s strange.
I’ve still got a couple of other figures that I’ve had again, probably close to God. It’s. Yeah, it’s probably coming close to about 18 years now. Like an old McFarlane. No, a thing I’ve mentioned, but you know, the spawn which myself of er I think we. Yeah. So the original spawn artist, he did a he’s, they’ve actually got a range of toys that they do.
Next the McFarlane toys. But I think they’ve got some, I think they do a lot of DC characters now as well. So yeah, I’ve got the licensing for some of those products. It’s pretty, pretty good on what they do. But yeah, I’ve got a couple of those. And again, I say I bought it for a little maybe five to convert now, probably around £20.
The thing I’ve got on eBay now, the last time I checked, I think I put on for about 150 or something, so it’s still not worth no huge. But this, this is the thing I was saying about the, the one that I, the, the motor racing helmet that I picked up, when I bought it must have been a fiver or something like that.
And I never really, you know, I didn’t buy it thinking it was going to be worth anything. And I know it know it’s not a lot of money, you know, I haven’t even sold it. So it’s probably not even worth £80. But yeah, it’s, but it’s still going up in money in, in value and, it’s it’s worth something to me.
It gets me a little bit more, you know, it gets me my money back and then some for, for one, I think the, the most astounding thing is when, when people keep these things, and it’s always the obscure things that become the most popular, for example, the Boba Fett Star Wars character. You know, I think that’s probably one of the worst.
One of the most amounts of money was like the original kind of Boba Fett, but why, why? It was extremely popular. Sorry. Adam’s actually just show me he’s got a in in the case Boba Fett display character stole the backing card and everything. It’s, It’s not that old, though. This one? Yeah, this one isn’t worth much, but will likely be a lot of some companies were just kind of re remaking the the original like 1980s and 90s releases on there.
So yeah, I think of all Boba Fett. No, no, five five that’s that’s worth some of them are worth good money. Yeah. But I think the original Boba Fett was the. Why. Because also so popular was because it had the backpack that could shoot missiles out, and that was basically blinding kids. So they stopped, they stopped producing that.
And all of a sudden that became the most sought after one because, you know, so few of them around. Yeah. It’s just fascinating how those obscure things, even I think the Etsy Nintendo game is apparently supposed to be one of the worst of the worst games, and it went to landfill. And that’s why it’s so, like, so sore after now.
Yeah, because somewhere in the world there’s a big pit full of them that you can’t get hold of the damn things anymore. I had met, it’s probably sitting in someone’s someone’s basement, and they they’re just releasing, you know, every single time. They just need a little bit of cash in the back pocket. They just coming off. I found this, this old cartridge that I can barely see, but I wonder how much that is.
I need to look that up. Yeah, see how much that’s left now. But some some things just hold the value and some things don’t, you know, you think something is going to be popular and it’s popular for the wrong reasons. Aren’t they, how bad they are. But when you also go back and you play some of these games, I’ve, I’ve recently gone back and played some of the old Nintendo games they used to enjoy, and then, oh, great, they but they’re difficult to play as well, aren’t they?
I think personally, just because you could so used to like the modern gaming style and how quick the modern game is, you know, everything’s a lot more, I don’t know, it just moves so much sharper. Yeah. Do you think do you think that. Oh, yeah. I’ve gone back and played a few games and it does almost seem a lot more difficult.
But I think one game that probably still holds up today was one of my favorite games of all time. Lemmings. Did you play lemmings? I used to love lemmings, actually. Good game. Such a good game. But yeah, that’s that’s the one where you get to tell all the characters what you want. Well, it’s certainly goals. They’ve got to get them to the end.
Yeah. You got a blocker or a builder or digger. A diagonal digger. Yeah a climber. You got climbers that build, you know, steps and stuff. Oh so epic. Whoever thought of that and then like suicidal as well, which is crazy I think. Where again. But you’ve got those games that are really good. The amounts of rubbish that was released back in the day as well, that just you, there’s some now I’ve gone back and played them.
I don’t even know why this is on there. Kind of, you know, the best collection or whatever. It’s really not great. I know, like the, didn’t PlayStation release the, like, say Go Mega Collection or something? Someone did open Xbox. Yeah. So you can make a collection and I got that. I’ve got that as well. I was like, no nostalgia.
This is going to be awesome. And I played like 4 or 5 of the games for about five minutes each, if that. I was like, I can’t play these games anymore, but just not good. Like Sonic. I used to love that, but I can’t play anymore. Yeah, it’s too weird. It’s very, very difficult to play because I think Sonic is also so fast paced.
It’s difficult to keep track, but you’ve got to play it the right way. It’s just it’s. Yeah, it’s it’s quite difficult. But the one that I always went back to was the one the two games is Streets of Rage. I mean that, that was cool. But again over time it gets a bit boring. You just think it’s going through the same screen.
Just putting your pet to. But then the other one that I never played when I was a kid, but I played when it came out on the release was Game Ground, game, game ground. Yeah, I don’t know that one. So it’s a top down view and you’ve got your characters. You can play with two people and you got your characters, and you basically gotta get everybody to the exits, but you’ve got to shoot enemies and they keep coming out.
It’s really good. So it’s one of those I still play now. I don’t know why, but, it’s good to get back to the nice, but then remasters are a bit of a popular signal, aren’t they as well. Yeah, I mean same that goes for movies at the moment as well isn’t it? Is like no, no new ideas out there.
I still, you know, even TV’s taken like video games and redoing and all making those into like live action people are people in Hollywood just struggling. I think, I don’t know, I think maybe they trying to maybe they’re trying to you can see what’s popular and stick to. But historically making movies based on films. So making films based on games has not been successful, received very well or successful, I think, some that I remember back in the day was Lara Croft.
Do you remember with, yeah. Angelina Jolie. Yeah. Angelina Jolie. And then, I liked I’m not hitman Tomb with the Tim Johnson one. Yeah, yeah, I like Tamim. I haven’t seen the remake of that. If it was a remake and, it was an original agent 47. Yeah, but that was, I think that Timothy Olyphant one was quite good, but it again received very well.
All right. So interesting. Yeah. I just don’t know why. I mean, they, they did break the fourth wall didn’t they. When he went through that window. And there was the kids playing the game. They were playing hitman on the screen as he smashed. Yeah I remember that now. So I kind of broke the fourth wall there and I don’t know defense what kind of destroyed it then.
Yeah. That’s where that like the ratings probably dropped 10% because that, you know, Rotten Tomatoes like the again ratings for movies in that I, I need to maybe we need to, there’s no point if you’re going to suggest we make a rating system, there’s absolutely no point, because as we’ve heard on previous podcasts, there are films that you like that I just don’t.
Yeah, this is true. So where do we stand on that? Yeah. 5050. Take the average. It’s going to be 50%. Yeah. But that’s better than some of the ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of my favorite films are go on Rotten Tomatoes or something. And I’ll look at some they’ll give it I don’t know the 10%. Like at the time, did they not see the same film.
Yeah. This film was awesome. How dare they. But it’s like you know and that’s what we said. Everyone’s got their own opinion. So yeah. But they, they’re also looking at it from different points of view and there and like you know you’ve got these critics analyzing a film and it’s like, gosh, this is a comedy. Just enjoy it for what it is, is, you know, and again they say you can’t release certain films nowadays.
That’s but we go back to it. You just these companies just want to make money and they don’t want to just make a few million. They want to make bands of millions. Yeah, yeah. Thank bro, thank thank bro. So yeah, I mean even I think my favorite film made a loss, you know, in the box office. Granted it’s from like the 70s but yeah I don’t know if we spoke about it on this podcast.
Our last one on this one. Yeah. The previous, 212 incarnation, which was yes, it’s the Italian Job, 1971, I think it is because it’s just a great film. But yeah, I think it made a loss in the box office, which that was sadly the start of, what’s his name? Let’s name career opiate cocaine. Michael.
Like who it.
He did it. Yeah I did, it’s. Yeah. So, Yeah. You can’t trust. Can’t trust. Right. Movie ratings online. You just gotta have your own opinion. Yeah. I wonder how many people actually go. I go to watch a film based on what critics have reviewed. I think a lot of people and, and I think that’s where your.
Do you think then influenced by that critics. Certainly. Yeah. That’s going to come out and the sheep, that’s what they are. They’re sheep. Yeah. They just good. Even when I watch, a trailer for a film, you know, when I see it, I don’t know if you did the same thing, but I start watching a trailer and I start building almost the story in my mind of the way it’s going to go and what’s going to happen.
And, you know, I’ve stopped watching trailers. I don’t watch them anymore. I try to completely ignore as too many spoilers. So when you go to the cinema, then you need to watch a film. What do you do? Okay, I watch some trailers, but if I if it’s. Okay. If it’s something that like it’s part of a series for instance.
And if it’s like the Marvel stuff, I won’t bother watching the trailers because I think I’m probably going to watch that film anyway. Yeah. Okay. What I mean.
I don’t know, maybe I would starve at times, maybe I do, maybe I don’t watch trailers, maybe I think I’m just going to take a punt on a film based on who’s in it. Yeah, it makes make sense. But it’s it’s the same throughout now when you start getting critics points of views on things and they kind of overanalyzing or you see too many things, this is the kind of takes away the magic on of the film.
And, I think I even mentioned, previously, when you watch a film and you kind of stop watching a film halfway through because we can’t, we can’t watch it all the time. And even if you take a break, it’s like you kind of lose a bit of that, that magic, you know, because they’ve built up this entire atmosphere and you know, and then you’re taking yourself out of it.
Yeah. And then take a try and bring yourself back into it when you resume. Yeah. Yeah. And it just kind of loses that. So that goes hand in hand. Like we were saying previously watching I think watching films in the cinema, for example, you can’t escape, you can’t do anything, can’t get distracted. That’s probably why some of the best films you’ll see will probably be at the cinema as well.
Yeah, just in the span of cinematic experience. So yeah, no, it’s good. I do enjoy it. So other than other than the cinema then like what what other places would you like to sort of where would you like to sort of frequent for entertainment purposes?
Well, I think when I go out sometimes from a pub, well, yeah. Apart from the pub I do enjoy, it’s, it’s expensive to do and I wish it was a bit cheaper, but every, every so often I do enjoy a good bowl. Well, bowling. Tenpin bowling. Yeah. And you can get it. Oh, no. I’m terrible.
You said you took a little while to answer that question. There was a slight pause there. So I’m wondering if you’re actually quite good at it, but you are trying to be modest, you know that. I think the the problem is I’m trying to change my game up a little bit because, you know, when you see people do, okay, he’s got game.
So he’s got to be quite at the will. You see when they do this, you know when they do the spinning back leg comes out. Yeah Beckley comes I mean I do the back to the ground. The yeah I don’t even need the ball. I just give the and, you get that pose at the end that they do.
Yeah. I want to try to see if I can get that. That just the right curve that they’re doing. See, you know, because that I think, also gives you more strikes. Just the way it spins, it creates, for me, when I do that, it gives me more gobbles. Yeah. Well, that’s, that’s that’s why when you ask the question in a cycle, are you good?
When, when I’m bowling, I can bowl fairly straight and that’s fine. But I’m at that stage. I’m not getting enough strokes now. So I feel like I need to just give a little bit a, like, a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, just to give it that a little bit. But it’s an art. Yeah. You know what these guys are doing?
I’ve gone to the stage. I’ve actually watched a couple of YouTube videos to try to see if I can get the spin and I went down to the alley and saw one of the. He was actually a security guard that was working there, and I saw him do a couple of balls and I actually saw because, you know, normally with bowling balls, I got the three holes.
Yeah. Which reminds me, when I was a kid, again, you don’t think about this stuff, but we need to go down to the bowling alley. When I was a kid. Who? We get to go to the bowling alley, and then you go, oh, well, let’s get some food while we’re here. Yeah. Fingers in the bowl. Yeah. Sticky fingers in your food.
Get like, you know, kids have got sticky fingers that most of the time, because of what they eat and what they do, those fingers are going back into the hole. Oh, yeah. Oh, I mean, if COVID’s taught us something, it’s cleaner bowling. Bozeman. It’s. But again it goes out the window. It’s. Yeah. Well what will go on to hygiene shortly.
But I saw the way this one guy was bowling, the security guard was instead of, putting your two fingers into the holes in your thumb in the third, he was just bowling with his two fingers and basically getting this little flick at the end. Because this is when he puts his thumb in that you can’t get it out quick enough to basically give it the spin.
So he does that and he curves it all the time. So obviously I can’t that it’s just to go straight into the gut so I can’t hold the bowl properly. You gotta get that like pincer movement back. It’s a yeah I don’t I, I you start analyzing it to go, you know I’ve, I got the rock weight of ball and I don’t know if maybe I need to get more aerodynamic shoes.
Aerodynamic shoes. Yeah. You don’t have to wear the dirty shoes anymore do you, when you go bowling. Yeah. What’s up with that? Was that also Covid thing? No, I think that stopped before Covid. Didn’t. But I remember like as a kid right up to I was probably in my 20s. Yeah. You if you ever went bowling you had to put their shoes on.
Can’t be slipping up. Health and safety, brother, because the shoes were slippery, though, like they had no, they didn’t stop. You slip it up if you cross the line, did they? Yeah. No, not at all. So I don’t know, maybe they had sensors in them. Yeah. So if you did cross the line, it counted as a foul. Yeah.
Tonight I’m going to need to get bowling shirt though at some points I think I’m at that stage bowling shirt man.
That’s another thing. I mean what’s that all about? So what do you mean football teams do it. And you know sports teams do do it. But they’re not very stylish are they. Bowling shirts a hideously ugly I would, I would tend to disagree with you there. It’s. You just want your name and script on a shirt. Yeah, but I need a cool nickname as well.
You know, I think it’s.
Yeah. So, I mean, I’ve discussed this with my brother in law already. About, bowling joined the team. Yeah. So I think I think it’s going to be, a wolf howling at a moon, and the moon’s got three holes on it. Whoa. Okay. I didn’t think of that. That’s going to happen. But you don’t think of that.
Come on. It’s right there. Then we can call ourselves the moon. Is, the howlers. Yeah, that’s that’s a that’s a good one to.
I’m going to have to see how much a customized, like, customized bowling shirt is going to be. And, yeah, the people part of me wants to join your team just so I get one of the shirts. Now, then you must join us. Just as it’s my design as a proxy. When you when you go to the bowling alley that we’ve been, you know, we’ll go play a couple of games, but then you got some guys that are obviously part of a league that are there as well, because they’ve got the bowling shirts.
So it must be probably. Yeah. So if you get the shirts you’ve got to join the league. Yeah. But probably expect so that’s, that’s the rules and you can be good enough for tornadoes. That’s, that’s I mean that’s, that’s cool. One. But when you, when you’re bowling and you see what they can do when you’re there and you see it just makes you think you can do it.
Yeah. Just. Oh, man. I’ll that’s what I’m doing now. That’s the same with anything. That’s me with golf I watch the pros and I’m like, how am I not pro? I do that, but what I do, I do it like once every 150 swing suspect. Yeah. I’ve, that’s the problem is people just make things look so easy.
And it’s again, it’s time, you know, and then they say 10,000 times of doing something 10,000 hours. Something like 10,000 hours. Yeah. So, ain’t nobody got time for that. Nobody got time for that. Yeah. So, Yeah, I think I want to chuck it into bowling and pull from that. It’s just just I want to know what color shirt you’re going to have and live for it.
Free that far? No, I didn’t. I mean, I’m thinking about, like, the it’s obviously it’s a wolf with the moon. It’s probably going to have to have the aurora borealis kind of in the background as well. But also aurora board of the Aurora or the Northern Lights can just be the background backdrop to it. On it. That could be the t shirt color.
Yeah, that would be a dark blue t shirt. But at the top it would be all like green and pinks and greens and yellows and. Yeah, yeah, I mean I’m, I’m not gonna I’m not gonna lie, this is probably going to be the younger shirt you ever seen, but it will fit right in at the bowling alley. Exactly.
Everyone’s going to be well, Joe. Yeah, yeah. But, yeah. So, Yeah, that’s that’s me, though, and. Yeah, but, I was just going to say what bowling alleys do you go to? Like, are they all sort of like similar bowling alleys so they professional bowling alleys or real ones with the arcades down onto them? Because that’s space.
They’re the best ones. Yeah. I go to the arcades. But again, it’s just too expensive. You know, maybe this is the reason you got to join the league, because maybe they get cheaper prices or, and, I mean, you’ll get your own bowl, space. You’re not really paying for the ball. That’s all included, isn’t it? So, yeah, but I’d need skip Iron Bowl to get your own bowl.
The clear one with a scorpion inside it. If you seen them. I think that’s actually the thing, is that I always think of the one with, the skull inside of it. Right? Yeah. Did you watch, Mystery man? Yes. No. Yeah, that was the one. Was Ben’s, Terrible, terrible movie. When I go back and watch it now.
Oh, no, I haven’t seen it. But, yeah, this woman put her father’s skull inside a bowling ball, and that was her superpower. Was bowling. So that’s. That’s crap. Yeah, it pretty much was. I think the scorpion was the scorpion in the bowl from uncle Buck. And I think that I can’t remember, I remember well, uncle Buck is.
Was that years ago? So the film. But so, you know, going back to the bowling alley, though, you’ve got to have a pool table, right? Oh, yes. There will be pool tables. There is. That way you go. Yeah. You’ve got the pool tables around. I enjoy a good game of pool as well. Yes. Okay. Get.
I wouldn’t say I’m very good. You know, I was, on the subject, so, I suppose moving it into darts and like other pub games, because pool’s kind of classed as a pub sport, right? Pub game. They’ve got the like they took pool seriously. It’s like they’re all, huge huge leagues for pool now.
The same with darts. But I don’t know why darts. Darts is weird. Is entertaining. Dunno. Did you see the darts. Is it okay. Whereas like if it is. No it is, it is. There was the darts that happened just this year. There was a nine dart finish where both guys just got 180, 880, 180, 180. Then the first guy that went up missed on his last dart to win the game.
And then the next guy stepped up and got all three where he needed to get. And it was so epic. The place was going, whoa. Yeah. Maybe it’s one of those games where if you you have to play it to appreciate it. Have you not played dancing? I’ve played darts a couple of times, but I’m. I don’t I’m weird with darts.
I’m over. I can’t remember whether I’m good when I’ve had a drink or whether I’m better without a drink. Remember? But to generally have a drink in you at that time. So it’s a bit. Yeah. It’s. I’m trying to that’s. I’ve been drunk. Yeah. Drinking Rob. Yeah. And same with pool though. I remember one of the best games of pool.
I ever played was after I had a few drinks. Yeah. And. Yeah. Grand evasion. Yeah. It’s never, never gonna happen again. But, because I remember when I used to, when I played pool, I used to actually finish one of my main exams for school. And then as soon as I finish that exam, I go to the pub, go play pool.
Nice. So instead of studying for the exam that I got the next day. So just go to school, have a couple of beers, go play some pool and yeah, figure out the exams more. Yeah, yeah. Well should we talk more about pub sports, pub games if you whatever they call them you know said there loads. So we got sports.
Yeah. Maybe we will look it up and we’ll talk a little bit more about pub games. Yeah. Sounds good. Awesome. All right. That’s right. That was the continuum for this week. We’ll catch you in the next one. We’ll see. Yeah. Thanks, everybody. Cheers.
